lj_abuse didn't work out

abuse_lj_abuse

[disconscious]
brad: Is this real?: "We're actually working on a system where people who are suspended can make their cases public, requiring LJ abuse to write a public explanation.

See, I don't know what LJ abuse is doing, because each case takes assloads of time and research, and I don't even have enough free time in a day to have a life. I spend all my time keeping the site alive.

Like you, though, I just don't trust LJ abuse, because I hear so many horror stories. But half the time I'm hearing the distorted half of the story, and not LJ abuse's side. Hence the new system, coming soon."

"Like you, though, I just don't trust LJ abuse."

"Like you, though, I just don't trust LJ abuse."

Signed: brad. Creator of LJ. Oh my god. I love that guy. I feel sooo vindicated. So, when do I get matriarchy back? Pleeeze!??

Thank you. And you kinda hit the nail on the head, Brad can change anything about the Abuse team or this site at any point. This was not the first time he's publically stated his mistrust for the Abuse team, yet with all the access his has, he doesn't even bother to do a anything.... note even delegate someone else to do it for him. Must suck to go through life not able to trust anyone.

i imagine he's got more interesting shit to care about than drama most of the time, and every once in a while he gets a chance to breathe and then realizes his community management volunteers are fucking the site over every chance they get out of ego and powertripping.

Cause obviously, if the situation is so bad, you can just put it on the back burner and only care about it when people scream loud enough.

Yes, it sure must suck when someone is so busy that it's hard to keep track of things. On the other hand, there are many instances where abuse has selectively applied the TOS. He gets a lot of complaints. I run a site, though not as large as LiveJournal, and when I receive a complaint about an admin, it's rather frustrating when I don't have the information readily accessible. With all the things I have to do in a day, it would make more sense to put it into a public forum, so those who can think for themselves can properly process all the information given to them, rather than one side.

You may have been an excellent abuse member. But Brad has reason to mistrust some of the actions out of abuse, and his decision makes sense. If one sentence is going to make people go apeshit, so be it.

When a suspend is done, there's a note attached. That note has a link to all the information about the case. Who did it, who filed the report, what steps were taken, who was emailed, etc etc etc etc. For someone that has access to all pieces of the site, accessing a link isn't all that hard.

That link does not contain the backstory, and I really doubt he wants to take the time to investigate every one. And you know what? That's why abuse is there. And know what else? There are a lot of fucks in abuse.

At this point though, how many complaints about 'unfair ljabuse suspensions/violations' are there? a hundred? a thousand? a day? a week? he can't possibly see them all, and to start selectively reviewing ljabuse cases is just as bad as not doing anything. I understand his frustration, because the problem is simply, at this point, too big for one person to oversee.

You should totally try to get Brad into therepy! It sounds like you have a DIRECT PIPELINE to his very soul! Maybe his distrust of the Abuse team stems from something a little more direct, like...oh crap I had it then I lost it...oh yeah, all the big whomping mistakes they've made because they've let their e-power go to their heads and failed miserably to do their duty - which is to make LJ a positive experience for as many users as possible. Now he recognizes that LJ Abuse has been a failure due to the individual failures of many of those who constitute it and has made that public. His announcement of that fact is not "disrespecting" the LJ Abuse team as our obviously street-savvy friend jlbmedia puts it, but acknowledging the failure of the LJ Abuse system that has allowed the LJ Abuse members to abuse their power for the benifit of their (majority furry) friends and the detriment of their (majority sane) enemies.

Indeed, it seems that every time I complained about the permanent suspension of a certain community, the bigger the words they used, and the more often they were mispelled.

You know, those are very valid points. He brings up the fact that he's (understandably) very busy running the rest of the site, so he has no time for oversight of the abuse team. Understandable.

However, I don't know if that's a good excuse when you publicly state your distrust for the workings of said team. There is a point where you delegate the operations, and whatever else, so that you can go deal with said problems.

I know exactly where brad is coming from, and where the abuse team is coming from. This whole thing has to be a hell of a bitch, as the majority of the users of LJ are just a bunch of whiny, sniveling little drama queens with nothing better to do than pick on each other. And Brad has one hell of a responsibility. With absolute power comes absolute responsibility, so Brad has to delegate - and trust - the staff that he has.

However, again, if I had a problem with a member of my staff, I'd address it directly and quickly. Otherwise it's very easy for problems to spiral quickly and uncontrollably out of control. There is a fine line between dictatorship and delegation, but as I like to say "I have root, and nobody else does, just remember that" :).

Anyway, I would also like the agree with what jlbmedia said. Thanks for your hard work on the abuse team, your pwnage of OMG BAD INTORWEB PEOPLE when they need it, and real insight into the abuse team.

I guess you won't get to read any of my fabulous abuse letters anymore.

We mourn the day that abuse lost such a great pair of titties.

I don't know erinn in any abuse capacity, but I have watched several issues on ljabuse be handled in a really great fashion. That this group of people are trashed so soundly - I'd leave and never look back. Fuck it.
